Our Story

What is Purple Meadow?

Much more than an arts & crafts shop

Situated in the lovely seaside town of Cleethorpes; Purple Meadow Arts & Crafts is the brainchild of Karl & Jill, mixed media artists & Powertex tutors. Our aim is to encourage people of all ages to experiment and enjoy creating for pleasure.

We run a variety of relaxed, fun & very friendly creative classes and workshops in our cosy shop. So what types of workshops do we offer – Powertex, Mixed-Media, Watercolour painting, Learn to Draw, Jewellery making, Wet and Needle Felting, Card-making, Pottery and the list goes on. Please see our events page for more details on these.

Workshops are held every week throughout the year, as well as offering 1-to-1 classes. We also cater for private group bookings. As well as our regular workshops we have a ‘pop in and paint’ option, where you can drop by (or pre-book a place), choose your MDF item to paint, sit down, relax and enjoy (with a cup of tea and biscuits thrown in).

Meet the Artists

Karl

Hi, I’m Karl, 1 half of Purple Meadow Arts & Crafts. I am a mixed-media artist & certified Powertex tutor who just loves meeting people & chatting. My passion has always been craft & art but for many years I was a musician. I am married to the lovely Jill who is the other half of Purple Meadows. I have given many craft workshops over the years but since 2018 the calling has been so strong I decided to persue a career in Arts & crafts as a full-time occupation.

I love all that is art & craft and it has taken me quite a while to find the right art medium for me. However, it was only about 5 years ago that I realised mixed media was my thing.

I am influenced by everyday objects. Much of my work involves upcycled and recycled items. I love to see items & materials not as what they are but what I could make from them & give new life into what sometimes have seen better days.

In 2015 myself & Jill decided to share the fun we were having, and Purple Meadow Arts & Crafts was founded. Two years ago, I gave up my then full-time employment, to follow my dream and I am now one of those very lucky people who does what they love every day as job. How lucky am I!

In our shop I create my unique artwork and run a wide variety of craft classes including, of course, Powertex workshops, so why not pop along I would love to meet you.

Jill

Let me introduce myself and tell you a little about me and my creative background.

As a child I either had my had a book in my hand or sat with a pencil sketching. Then, like a lot of us crafty, creative people, I started making cards and found a love of paper crafts and scrapbooking. This changed dramatically, when we discovered Powertex, fabric sculpting and ultimately mixed media.

I love making artwork with textures and depth. Using materials in different ways is very therapeutic for me and is my way to relax and switch off from the stresses of my ‘paying the bills’ job. Creating and blending colours is also another element of what I like to do.

There is nothing more relaxing than getting a paintbrush in your hand and mixing paint together just to see what happens.

Delivering workshops is a ‘love’ in itself. Watching people create something, developing their own confidence and walking out with a finished piece that they love is so rewarding. We have met many lovely people over the years, and often two people that started out as strangers at the start of a workshop end up being friends. I feel very blessed to be a part of bringing pleasure into people’s lives and helping them also, to switch of from a mad busy world that we live in.
